Unfortunately, last night’s rain had caused the
temperature to drop rapidly, and all throughout the day there were showers. Not
very pleasant, but I covered at least a little more ground on my sightseeing
tour. I started the day off at Coles again, because they have yummy cinnamon
doughnuts, 6 for only $1.50, which is as cheap as you’ll get any kind of food
in Australia.
Then I went back to Victoria Market, with an actual
market happening this time. They don’t just sell food there, but also all sorts
of clothing, merchandise, and other stuff that no-one really needs. Since I had
already found a great offer for kiwi fruits at Coles, I didn’t have to look for
fruit anymore; I won’t be able to take any leftovers to Sydney with me because
of quarantine restrictions, so I only bought as much fruit as I’m sure I’ll eat
until my departure Saturday night. But the clothes. Of course I spent a lot of
time looking at the clothes, especially all the pretty little dresses (I didn’t
bring any dresses from Germany…). I saw one that I liked particularly well, a
green woolen dress, very short, with a beautiful pattern, ¾ arms and a deep
V-neck. I circled back three times until I was at the “Fuck it, I’m just gonna
buy it even though I don’t really need it”-stage. So yeah, I got the dress.
I hopped on the City Circle again and went out to
the waterfront with the marina and all the pretty (and presumably pretty
expensive) yachts. The weather was crappy, though, so I didn’t stick around for
too long. Back in the city, I looked at the Town Hall and then strolled through
China Town, which is a lot bigger and a lot less smelly than the one in
Adelaide. One street up, you find the Greek quarters, so I took the opportunity
and went back through there. On the way, I stumbled upon another church which
was really beautiful from the outside; the inside was very underwhelming I comparison
and smelled really bad (old carpet). It’s called Wesley Church, so if you
happen to pass by, take pictures of the building but spare yourself the stinky
inside. After that, one of the worst showers of the day came pouring down on
Melbourne, and I ended up seeking shelter in the State Library. Again.
Libraries have a strange power over me, and I blame Joss Whedon for that. After
the rain stopped, I walked up a couple of blocks to have a look at the City
Baths because of their stunning architecture, and circling back, I ended up at
the Old Melbourne Gaol where they hanged Ned Kelley (a movie I have to watch
soon for Heath Ledger’s performance in an Aussie accent).
Because I was getting hungry, I went back to the
hostel to cook some pasta, but unfortunately, they weren’t done cleaning the
kitchen, so I just headed back out again. I had planned to walk in some parks,
but when I was halfway to the first, it started to rain again. It was too
annoying to keep trying, so I gave up, got my laptop and went back to my
favorite place, avoiding not only rain, but even a hail shower. I sincerely
hope for better weather in Sydney, Surfers Paradise and Brisbane. Everyone
tells me that I won’t be disappointed, so I’ve got my hopes up for Sunday!!!
