Sunny Sydney 16/09/2012

The night train was alright, even though I didn’t get a whole lot of sleep. When I arrived in Sydney, I stayed at the station for a couple of hours because online, it said that check-in at the hostel starts at 11am and I didn’t want to be there hours before. I made the most of my time, already booking my train ticket to Canberra for Wednesday and purchasing a pretty expensive weekly ticket for Sydney’s transport system which allows me to use all the busses and ferries, and some of the city trains.
I had to take one of those trains from Central Station to Kings Cross, which turns out to be the red-light district…yay :S And there are about ten hostels in that street, each and every entrance hidden. I had to ask twice, before I finally made it to the right one. It has a lot of stairs, but it’s relatively clean, and there’s free breakfast and wifi (although it doesn’t work at the moment). The dorms have their own bathrooms, so you don’t have to share with the whole floor, and their own fridge and freezer as well. So my first little trip was to the next Coles to get some apples, lemonade (raspberry flavor, disgusting yet addictive), and my favorite instant noodles.
Afterwards I went to the city center, got some food from McDonald’s, and then joined a free 3 hour guided walk around Sydney. The girl who does these tours was super nice, showed us all the major sights and added bits of history, but not too much so it didn’t get boring. The weather was nice and sunny, not hot, but warm enough for hot pants. I’m desperate to get a tan before I get back to Flaxley.
The city definitely lives up to the hype. It’s quite hilly, and like Melbourne, there’s a nice mixture of historic buildings and modern architecture. One of the main streets was used in several Hollywood movies because apparently it looks very American. Parts of “The Matrix” and the new Superman were shot here. The highlights of the tour were the Harbour Bridge and Opera House, of course. At the quay, there were even some guys playing the didgeridoo, which added some more Australian atmosphere to the whole setting.
We didn’t go inside anything on this tour, but we saw all the famous sights and at least now I know where to find what, how to get there, and other fun things you can do when you’re in Sydney. The tour ended at around 5.30pm, and as it was getting dark and cold, I headed straight back to the hostel, to take a shower and then go to bed early to get a little more sleep than last night. The people in my room are mostly German, and two girls who can’t be older than 19, are a bit catty, so I didn’t let them know I’m German just yet. And I was told that the French girl, who lives in this room as well, gets a visitor every night and everyone else in here gets treated to some live porn. I honestly hope this won’t happen tonight.
