The first night at Sunny’s Adelaide Backpackers
Hostel was quite nice; I got enough sleep even though the matress was so soft
that you basically sleep on wooden planks. It’s a warm day here and the weather
forecast said it’s going to be over 20°C today, which is why I postponed my
museum/ old buildings tour to tomorrow, when it’s supposed to rain, and go
spend the day at Glenelg beach instead. After the yummy pancake breakfast, I
hopped on the tram at Victoria Square (bought a day pass for $9.10) and thirty
minutes later I got off at the last stop, which is less than a hundred metres
from the beach. I took a couple of photos, before my batteries ran out, and
tipped my toes in the (very, very cold) Pacific ocean. At the moment, I’m just
sitting here on the beach, writing, breathing in the salty breeze, and
relaxing. In an hour or so I will go for a walk around town; there are some
historic buildings I want to see and I need to buy new batteries for my camera,
especially since I’ll be going to Kangaroo Island on Thursday and plan to take
a gazillion photos.

The camera is broken. I bought new batteries, but it
just won’t come back to life. So I had to get back to Adelaide to buy a new
camera, because I don’t want to have to use my cell phone camera for the rest
of my stay. To not empty my travel funds on the second day, I bought a simple
one for $89 and it works. When I went to buy it, I also got around to checking
out Rundle Mall; at least this way the little trip wasn’t for nothing. Good
thing I bought the day ticket for the tram, or I would have had to pay double.
The heat was unbearable in the city because of traffic, and I escaped to
Glenelg again. While on the tram, I saw one of the “historic” churches, which
was so unspectacular, that I decided to skip the tour around town and just walk
on the beach instead. Which I did extensively. I haven’t been to the ocean in
so long that I forgot all about the tide. The memory came back to me when I
ended up knee-deep in the Pacific…
It’s an immensely beautiful day and I found a little
rock to sit on and watch the waves. I’m taking another little break , sitting
here, writing. I hope that I’ll have a little bit of a tan after today, because
the sunshine is rather intense.

When I got back to Adelaide, I went to Pilgrim
Uniting Church and took some photos before heading back to the hostel. I’ve got
sand everywhere so a shower is due as soon as it is free, because there is only
one for all the girls in the hostel which makes it a bit tricky. Maybe I’ll try
after 10, when people are either sleeping or out partying. The only challenge
is going to be to stay up “late”, but I guess I’ll manage. I can always get
some writing done to keep me awake…
